You can control a remote PC by using a Microsoft Remote Desktop client. The client can run on almost any device, including on your mobile smartphone. The client gives you the same powers you would have if you could reach the PC's keyboard. Through the client, you can:

• Operate the apps that are installed on the PC.
• Access the files and network resources of the PC.
• Leave the apps open when you end the client.

Microsoft Surface Remote Desktop Connection

You can integrate features of Remote Desktop clients across platforms by enabling a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) scheme. Learn about the supported URI attributes that you can use with the iOS, Mac, and Android clients.

Situation: When connecting to a remote desktop session using a Microsoft Surface laptop, the screen resolution is too high. This makes the icons and user interface on the remote server extremely small. Too small to do any work! For a deeper understanding, the Microsoft Surface Book has a default resolution of 3000x2000 pixels, on a 13.5” screen.

Task: As the laptop administrator, I have the permission and am also responsible for changes made on the laptop.

Action: The higher DPI on the Microsoft Surface laptops makes everything on the screen nice and crisp, but this doesn’t translate well when connecting to a remote computer. To fix this, perform the steps below.

Open your registry and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSideBySide.

Right-click the SideBySide folder and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Name the new DWORD Value PreferExternalManifest and give it a value of 1.

Close your registry.

Download the preconfigured manifest file that I have available HERE.

Extract the file to C:WindowsSystem32. You are extracting the manifest file here because mstsc.exe resides at this location. Mstsc creates connections to remote desktop session host servers or other remote computers.

Once the manifest file is extracted to C:WindowsSystem32, YOU’RE DONE.

Result: Connecting to a remote desktop computer now has a properly scaled resolution, whether you’re using a full screen or a fixed resolution in the RDP settings.

Note: This process applies to other programs that aren’t scaling well with the high DPI on the Microsoft Surface laptops, like Teamviewer. Rename the manifest file to teamviewer.exe.manifest and copy it to the same folder as the teamviewer.exe file. THAT’S IT. The manifest file has to be the same name as the corresponding application executable, for example, APP.EXE.MANIFEST, before copying it to where the application executable resides.
