An anonymous German blog reader has left this comment (thanks for that) to the German blog post Windows 10 20H2-Upgrade: Microsoft Edge-Downgrade als Stolperfalle [English edition here](. Microsoft has announced the release of the new Edge Browser for WSUS in support article KB4584642 (Update in WSUS for the new Microsoft Edge …). This version is based on the Chromium browser and is available for the following Windows 10 versions:

• Windows 10 Version 1809
• Windows 10 Version 1903
• Windows 10 Version 1909
• Windows 10 Version 2004

The browser is available in the Microsoft Update Catalog as KB4584641 for Windows 10 version 1803 and KB4584642 for Windows 10 version 1809 through 2004. This update includes the following quality improvements:

• Start menu pins, tiles, and shortcuts for the current version of Microsoft Edge will migrate to the new Microsoft Edge.
• Taskbar pins and shortcuts for the current version of Microsoft Edge will migrate to the new Microsoft Edge.
• The new Microsoft Edge will be pinned to the taskbar. If the current version of Microsoft Edge is already pinned, it will be replaced. On devices joined to a Domain, Active Directory, Azure AD or on Windows 10 Enterprise Editions, the new Microsoft Edge will only be pinned to the taskbar if the current version of Microsoft Edge is already pinned.
• The new Microsoft Edge will add a shortcut to the desktop. If the current version of Microsoft Edge already has a shortcut, it will be replaced. On devices joined to a Domain, Active Directory, Azure AD or on Windows 10 Enterprise Editions, the new Microsoft Edge will only add a shortcut to the desktop if the current version of Microsoft Edge already has a shortcut.
• By default, most protocols that Microsoft Edge handles will be migrated to the new Microsoft Edge.
• The current version of Microsoft Edge will be hidden from UX surfaces in the OS. This includes settings, applications, and any file or protocol support dialog boxes.
• Trying to start the current version of Microsoft Edge will redirect to the new Microsoft Edge.
• The First Run Experience (FRE) will auto-launch the first time that a device restarts after the new Microsoft Edge is installed. This does not occur on devices joined to a Domain, Active Directory, Azure AD nor on Windows 10 Enterprise and Surface Hub Editions.
• Data from earlier versions of Microsoft Edge (such as passwords, favorites, open tabs) will be available in the new Microsoft Edge.
• The new Microsoft Edge does not support the removal of this update.

The new Edge Browser integrates the browser engine based on Google’s Chromium project. Microsoft will distribute the final version of the Chromium-based browser to all systems with Windows 10 version 1803 and higher via Windows Update starting January 15, 2020.

• Jan 14, 2020 Re: getting edge chromium over wsus @azeigler We don't use ConfigMgr and are able to start pushing out Edge installer MSI as a standard group policy software deployment but do you know if the installer will make it in to WSUS at some point and if so, any ideas on when seeing as Microsoft are now pushing out to consumer devices via Windows Update.
• How to Check for Updates in Microsoft Edge Chromium Microsoft has adopted the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility. This new Microsoft Edge runs on the same Chromium web engine as the Google Chrome browser, offering you best in class web compatibility and performance.

Microsoft also indicates in the KB article which updates must be installed as a prerequisite.

Microsoft released the new Edge based on Chromium this year. I will show you how to get it.

Microsoft announced in 2018 that they will rebuild the Edge browser and use the Chromium project (Which is a code subset of the Chrome browser) as code basis. The (first) final version has been released on January 15th 2020. Depending on your environment, you might have to perform some additional steps to get the new browser on your clients.

Unmanaged Windows 10 Home or Pro

Unmanaged versions means that the clients are not Active Directory/Azure Active Directory joined or do not receive their updates via WSUS, SCCM or Windows Update for Business (WUfB).

Edge Chromium Windows 7 Wsus

Online ssh client. These clients will receive the new browser with the regular Windows updates. If you want to block the update to the new Edge, you need the Blocker Toolkit to disable automatic delivery of Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based). This download contains admx files to create group policies blocking the update and the cmd file which sets the required registry key manually.
Alternatively you can set the registry key by yourself:

Key value name:DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium
Key type: REG_DWORD

Edge Chromium Deploy Wsus

Values:

• Key is not defined: Distribution is not blocked.
• 0: Distribution is not blocked.
• 1: Distribution is blocked.

Managed Windows 10 devices

Install kafka docker. If you are using domain joined clients or Windows 10 Enterprise/Education, then the new browser will (for the time being) not be updated automatically. If you want your clients to get the new browser, you have to install it yourself.

The installation file for the new browser can be downloaded from the Microsoft Edge for Business website. This site also contains the download link for the admx files to manage the new edge via group policies.

Microsoft Edge based on Chromium

The last step, if you are using WSUS or SCCM to patch your clients, is to enable a product to update the new edge. You will find the new product “Microsoft Edge” within the folder “Windows”:
